Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Nets Millions in Fines Across Italy

Italian authorities have conducted a nationwide operation targeting illegal gambling activities, resulting in significant fines and legal actions. The operation, which took place between May 20th and 31st, 2025, was overseen by the Committee for the Prevention and Repression of Illegal Gambling (CoPReGI), focusing on game security and the protection of minors.

The collaborative effort involved the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM), the State Police, the Carabinieri, and the Financial Police. Together, they inspected 618 businesses operating within the public gaming sector. These included betting shops, recharge points, commercial establishments, and private clubs housing AWP (Amusement With Prices) machines.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups

CoPReGI, led by the Director of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, Roberto Alesse, aims to protect vulnerable populations, especially minors, while ensuring a safe and legal gaming environment. The committee’s work is centered on preventing and suppressing illegal activities within the sector.

The synergy between ADM and the Police Forces, leveraging experienced personnel and advanced technologies, led to the discovery of 22 unauthorized betting locations. Authorities seized 149 AWP machines and irregular gaming devices, along with 35 totems and 20 personal computers used to access illegal gaming sites.

Significant Penalties Imposed

The operation also had substantial penal and sanctioning consequences. Forty-six individuals were reported to judicial authorities, and 231 administrative violations were identified, resulting in total fines of approximately €5,739,000.
