Illegal Casinos Spark Outrage in Northern Tamaulipas

Business leaders in northern Tamaulipas have reported two clandestine casinos in Reynosa to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the Ministry of the Interior (Segob). The move comes as the private sector raises concerns about the proliferation of illegal gambling operations.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce (Fecanaco) stated that the two establishments are operating without the necessary permits from federal and state authorities. Julio Almanza Armas, president of Fecanaco, emphasized the unfair advantage these illegal casinos have over legitimate businesses.

“The illegal operation of these casinos undermines legally established businesses in the same sector, which must meet a large number of requirements to operate. Both our organization and the affected formal businesses have filed formal complaints with the competent authorities regarding their illegal operation,” he stated.

Locations of the Illegal Casinos

According to the complaint, one casino, named “Virreyes,” is located at Calzada Los Virreyes number 1075, in the Medardo González neighborhood, within the downtown area. The second, called “Casino Punta Calabozo,” is situated in the Puerta del Sol neighborhood.

The complaints filed with the FGR, Segob, and the Tamaulipas Ministry of Finance allege that these businesses lack the necessary authorizations and permits to operate, including land use permits, state approval, and permits from the General Directorate of Games and Sweepstakes.

“Their operation without due authorization constitutes various crimes, such as criminal association, operation with funds of illicit origin, tax evasion, organized crime, and money laundering,” Almanza Armas pointed out.

Consequently, Fecanaco has requested the immediate closure of these establishments. The General Directorate of Games and Sweepstakes, as well as the Financial and Economic Intelligence Unit of Tamaulipas, have also been notified to initiate investigations and appropriate legal actions.

Similar reports of illegal casinos in Reynosa were made to the federal government at the end of last year.
