Spain Launches Grants for Gambling Research

The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and Agenda 2030 has announced a new round of grants to fund research into the risks and effects associated with gambling. The initiative aims to deepen understanding of gambling’s impact on individuals and society.

A total of €1,049,380 is available for this purpose. The grants are open to organizations based in Spain or with a permanent presence in the country. Eligible applicants include public and private research centers, universities, healthcare institutions affiliated with the National Health System, and non-profit organizations that formally collaborate with these institutions.

To ensure impartiality, non-profit organizations must guarantee that their governing bodies do not include operators involved in the organization or operation of games regulated by law.

Research Focus Areas

The funded projects must begin after January 1, 2024, and conclude by June 30, 2025. The research areas are broad, encompassing:

  • Early detection of risky gambling behaviors.
  • Analysis of the impact on health, social relationships, personal finances, and the work environment.
  • Links between video games and games of chance.
  • Gender differences in gambling patterns.
  • Specifically, the impact of lotteries.

The inclusion of “lotteries” as a specific area of study marks a notable addition to the research scope.

Application Details

Applications must be submitted within one month through the electronic headquarters of the DGOJ (Directorate General for Gambling Regulation).

This initiative represents a significant investment in understanding the complexities of gambling and its effects on the Spanish population.
