Italian Gambling Revenue Reaches Nearly €12 Billion in 2024

Rome – Italy’s public gambling sector generated nearly €12 billion in revenue in 2024, according to Roberto Alesse, Director of the Customs and Monopolies Agency (Adm). Alesse made the announcement while opening a session dedicated to public gaming at the Agency’s General Assembly. The event brought together institutions, industry operators, academic experts, and scientists for extensive discussions.

Alesse emphasized the significant transformation underway in the gambling sector, affecting both legislation and administration. He highlighted the Agency’s achievements in supporting legislative activities and managing various types of games available to users. Alesse also thanked Marco Osnato, President of the Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, for his valuable institutional collaboration.

Focus on Responsible Gaming

Mario Lollobrigida, Director of Gaming at Adm, underscored the importance of responsible gaming as the cornerstone of a sustainable and modern system. Recent data indicates that over 97% of online gaming account holders exhibit responsible behavior, while 1% show potential signs of addiction. However, estimates suggest that approximately 20 million Italians regularly participate in public gaming, spending an average of €90 per month. Around 1.7% of players are considered to be at moderate or severe risk.

Lollobrigida also noted that problem gamblers are more likely to engage in illegal gambling, which deprives the state of resources and exposes vulnerable individuals to further health and social risks. The ongoing regulatory overhaul, including the recent Legislative Decree No. 41 of 2024, introduces innovative tools such as artificial intelligence, self-limitation systems, and automated warning messages to enhance player protection.

A Collaborative Approach to Regulation

Lollobrigida reiterated the Agency’s approach, which is based on inter-institutional collaboration, dialogue with stakeholders, and investments in research. “The new regulatory framework we are building should not be seen as a mere set of rules, but as a path of collective growth for the sector, based on sustainability, responsibility, and legality,” he stated.
