Hi, I’m Liam Kinsella, a 38-year-old Irishman with a lifelong love for sport and a career shaped by the fast-moving world of iGaming. I’ve spent the majority of my professional life in the industry, working across everything from operations and customer experience to product and innovation. My passion for iGaming was sparked when I was a teenager after attending my first race night at Dundalk Stadium. I’ll never forget the atmosphere, the intensity, and the connection people had to the sport. It was electric. That night opened my eyes to a world where entertainment, competition, and community all came together. Since then, I’ve worked with some fantastic teams and brands, helping to create engaging experiences that bring that same thrill to players around the globe. Outside of work, I’m a big sports fan. Rugby, football, racing, even a bit of darts. I’ve also got a soft spot for gardening; there’s something therapeutic about switching off and spending a few hours with the plants. When I’m not outdoors, I’m usually reading - anything from sports biographies to thrillers. I’m proud to be part of the global tech and gaming space, and I’m always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what iGaming can offer.

Online Betting in France: Navigating the Legal Landscape

The popularity of online sports betting and gambling has surged in recent years. With millions of players participating, the legality of betting in France has become a critical issue. What does the law say? Can you really place bets without running into trouble?

What Types of Bets Are Legal?

French law primarily permits three types of online games: sports betting, horse race betting, and poker. Other forms of gambling, such as online slot machines or casino games, remain prohibited. To bet legally, you must use operators approved by the ANJ (Autorité Nationale des Jeux – National Gaming Authority). This is the only way to ensure that the site complies with the rules, pays out winnings, and protects players. Among these reliable and authorized platforms is betbrothers.fr, which offers a secure and transparent experience for French bettors. Betting on an unauthorized site carries significant risks: no guarantees on the security of your data, the payment of your winnings, or even the reliability of the bets themselves.

A Clear and Strict Legal Framework

In France, gambling has long been regulated by law, but the regulations took a significant leap forward in 2010. Before that, online betting existed in a gray area, where the rules were vague, and players could easily be taken advantage of, often encountering insecure or unreliable sites, especially for major sports bets during Ligue 1 or other major competitions. This lack of a clear framework also posed problems for the state, which could not effectively control or tax this rapidly expanding market.

Since the enactment of the law of May 12, 2010, France has created an independent authority, the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ). Its role is to supervise, regulate, and control all actors in the sector to guarantee transparency, security, and, above all, to protect players against the risks of addiction and fraud. The ANJ also ensures market balance by issuing licenses only to operators who meet strict criteria, contributing to a healthier and more reliable gaming environment.

Rules to Follow for Legal Betting

The legislation also imposes very specific rules to regulate the behavior of players and operators. There are addiction prevention tools, such as the ability to limit your stakes or even self-exclude temporarily or permanently. These measures help protect vulnerable players and better control their gambling habits. Furthermore, licensed operators must also provide clear and accessible information on betting rules, odds of winning, and conditions related to bonuses or promotions.

This transparency is essential to prevent abuse, limit deceptive practices, and ensure a fair gaming environment. Finally, it is important to know that the penalties for violations are severe. Illegal operators face heavy fines, legal action, and may be prohibited from operating in France. On the other hand, players who bet on unauthorized sites may have their winnings confiscated and have no legal recourse in case of a dispute.
