Hi, I’m Liam Kinsella, a 38-year-old Irishman with a lifelong love for sport and a career shaped by the fast-moving world of iGaming. I’ve spent the majority of my professional life in the industry, working across everything from operations and customer experience to product and innovation. My passion for iGaming was sparked when I was a teenager after attending my first race night at Dundalk Stadium. I’ll never forget the atmosphere, the intensity, and the connection people had to the sport. It was electric. That night opened my eyes to a world where entertainment, competition, and community all came together. Since then, I’ve worked with some fantastic teams and brands, helping to create engaging experiences that bring that same thrill to players around the globe. Outside of work, I’m a big sports fan. Rugby, football, racing, even a bit of darts. I’ve also got a soft spot for gardening; there’s something therapeutic about switching off and spending a few hours with the plants. When I’m not outdoors, I’m usually reading - anything from sports biographies to thrillers. I’m proud to be part of the global tech and gaming space, and I’m always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what iGaming can offer.

Spanish Online Gaming Sector Sees Growth, But Challenges Loom

The online gaming sector in Spain is experiencing significant growth, but industry leaders are calling for collaborative action to address challenges that could impact its long-term sustainability. Jdigital, a leading industry association, has analyzed the latest data from the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), Spain’s gaming regulator, highlighting both the sector’s successes and the issues that need attention.

Strong Revenue Growth in 2024

The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reached €1,454.59 million in 2024, a 17.61% increase compared to the previous year. Casino games led the way, accounting for 50.23% of the total GGR, followed by betting at 41.86%. This growth reflects a positive trend across all segments of the online gaming market.

In the broader European market, online gaming represents 39% of total gaming revenue in 2024, up from 37% in 2023. A recent report by EGBA (European Gaming and Betting Association) in collaboration with H2 Gambling Capital, projects continued growth for 2025.

“The data published by the DGOJ and EGBA demonstrate that the online gaming sector is not only growing but also consolidating and transforming,” said Jorge Hinojosa, Director General of Jdigital. “However, we believe it is necessary to reflect on various problems affecting the sector that require joint action with the regulator to ensure the market’s long-term sustainability.”

Sustainability Concerns and Regulatory Challenges

Despite the impressive growth, concerns remain about the sector’s long-term sustainability in Spain. One key factor is the relatively low penetration of online gaming compared to other European countries. While over thirteen European nations exceed 50% penetration, Spain stands at just 14.2%, according to the EGBA report.

Other challenges include the need for a balanced regulatory framework that protects consumers without unduly harming the industry, and the global issue of illegal gambling. Addressing illegal gambling will require new collaborative measures between operators and regulators.

Building Trust and Security

Projecting an image of solidity and security for the regulated online gaming sector in Spain is crucial. This would foster greater confidence in operators and encourage them to continue providing high-quality entertainment to users. A reliable and responsible gaming environment is the most effective tool for preventing and combating issues such as identity theft and other types of fraud.

Key Issues for the Future

  • Ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
  • Addressing the relatively low penetration of online gaming in Spain.
  • Establishing a balanced regulatory framework.
  • Combating illegal gambling through collaborative efforts.
  • Building trust and security in the regulated online gaming market.
