No New Casino Permits Issued Under Sheinbaum Administration, Says Interior Secretary
The Mexican government, under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, has not issued any new permits for casinos, according to Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez. This announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday.
Rodríguez emphasized that this administration’s approach differs significantly from previous ones, where authorizations for new gambling establishments were more common. “No permit has been granted for new casinos in this administration,” she stated firmly from the National Palace.
Past Permits Issued Under Court Order
The Interior Secretary clarified that any permits issued during previous administrations were the result of court orders, not administrative decisions made by the Interior Ministry (Segob). This distinction is crucial, she noted, to understanding the current government’s stance.
Rodríguez also revealed that she has met with representatives from the casino industry, who have requested an update to the legal framework governing their operations. The current law dates back to 1947 and is considered outdated by many in the sector.
“Casino operators have suggested that new legislation is needed. We have told them that this possibility is under analysis and could be proposed in September or October,” she explained.
During her remarks, Rosa Icela Rodríguez stressed the government’s commitment to preventing corruption within the Interior Ministry. She asserted that any irregularities involving officials or companies would be dealt with through legal action.
“If there are complaints, they will be filed; if there are officials involved, action will be taken,” she warned.
