Liam Kinsella

Hi, I’m Liam Kinsella, a 38-year-old Irishman with a lifelong love for sport and a career shaped by the fast-moving world of iGaming. I’ve spent the majority of my professional life in the industry, working across everything from operations and customer experience to product and innovation. My passion for iGaming was sparked when I was a teenager after attending my first race night at Dundalk Stadium. I’ll never forget the atmosphere, the intensity, and the connection people had to the sport. It was electric. That night opened my eyes to a world where entertainment, competition, and community all came together. Since then, I’ve worked with some fantastic teams and brands, helping to create engaging experiences that bring that same thrill to players around the globe. Outside of work, I’m a big sports fan. Rugby, football, racing, even a bit of darts. I’ve also got a soft spot for gardening; there’s something therapeutic about switching off and spending a few hours with the plants. When I’m not outdoors, I’m usually reading - anything from sports biographies to thrillers. I’m proud to be part of the global tech and gaming space, and I’m always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what iGaming can offer.

Online Gambling Surges in Portugal: A Look at the Numbers

Portugal’s online gambling market is experiencing a significant boom, with bets soaring by 31% in 2024, exceeding €20 billion. This surge is largely driven by online slot machines, which account for a staggering 73.2% of all bets, totaling €15.217 billion, according to data from the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ).

The SRIJ notes that this figure is nearly double what was recorded just two years ago. This growth is attributed to increased national interest in games of chance, fueled by direct deposits, promotional bonuses, and the reinvestment of winnings.

Sports Betting Also Sees Growth

Sports betting is also on the rise, with a 19.2% increase, reaching €2.053 billion. Football dominates this sector, accounting for €1.4876 billion in bets. The Primeira Liga, Portugal’s top football league, is particularly popular, attracting 10.9% of all sports bets, equivalent to €162.1 million – a 20.7% increase. The Premier League and Champions League follow in popularity.

Revenue Growth for Gambling Companies

Companies offering sports betting have seen their revenue increase by 33.6% in 2024, reaching €433.4 million. Meanwhile, companies specializing in games of chance have reported a 30.3% increase in revenue, totaling €678.5 million.

Crackdown on Illegal Gambling

Authorities are actively combating illegal online gambling. In the last three months of 2024, 41 websites were flagged for closure, and 112 notifications were issued for ISP blocking. Five cases have been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Since the implementation of the online gambling law, a total of 43 cases have been referred.
