Spain’s Gaming Authority Revamps Responsible Gambling Council, Unveils Future Strategy

Spain’s General Directorate of Gaming Regulation (DGOJ), under the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and Agenda 2030, has announced the inaugural session of its newly appointed Advisory Council on Responsible Gambling. The meeting also saw the presentation of the draft Safe Gambling Program 2026-2030.

The council’s renewal follows the expiration of the previous council’s term in May. Mikel Arana, Director General of Gaming Regulation, presided over the meeting as the Council’s president.

The Advisory Council on Responsible Gambling includes professionals and representatives from the General State Administration and the Autonomous Communities. It also incorporates experts from the scientific, healthcare, and academic fields who are involved in addressing gambling-related disorders.

Representatives from institutions, organizations, and associations connected to the gaming sector and gaming operators are also part of the council.

Safe Gambling Program 2026-2030: A Four-Year Strategy

Beyond the council’s formation, the meeting focused on the DGOJ’s presentation of the proposed Safe Gambling Program 2026-2030. This strategic document outlines the work plan for the next four years.

The program emphasizes three key priorities:

  • Analysis and diagnosis of the current situation
  • Prevention and promotion of safe gambling practices
  • Protection of participants

The program further details six general objectives and 22 specific measures. These are designed to foster new collaborative efforts with the Advisory Council on Responsible Gambling.

Council members have three months to contribute to the draft program. The goal is to reach a consensus and approve a final document at the next meeting. This document will then guide public policy on safe gambling.
