Liam Kinsella
Hi, I’m Liam Kinsella, a 38-year-old Irishman with a lifelong love for sport and a career shaped by the fast-moving world of iGaming. I’ve spent the majority of my professional life in the industry, working across everything from operations and customer experience to product and innovation. My passion for iGaming was sparked when I was a teenager after attending my first race night at Dundalk Stadium. I’ll never forget the atmosphere, the intensity, and the connection people had to the sport. It was electric. That night opened my eyes to a world where entertainment, competition, and community all came together. Since then, I’ve worked with some fantastic teams and brands, helping to create engaging experiences that bring that same thrill to players around the globe. Outside of work, I’m a big sports fan. Rugby, football, racing, even a bit of darts. I’ve also got a soft spot for gardening; there’s something therapeutic about switching off and spending a few hours with the plants. When I’m not outdoors, I’m usually reading - anything from sports biographies to thrillers. I’m proud to be part of the global tech and gaming space, and I’m always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what iGaming can offer.

Spain Presents Advanced Gambling Risk Detection Model in Paris

The General Directorate of Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) showcased its cutting-edge model for detecting risky gambling behaviors at an international event in Paris. The presentation, hosted by the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), highlighted Spain’s progress in safeguarding vulnerable players.

Mikel Arana, the Director-General of the DGOJ, detailed how the model analyzes real-world behaviors of players diagnosed with gambling disorders. This approach, aligned with Royal Decree 176/2023, strengthens player protection through collaboration between research and public administration.

Spanish Risk Detection Model for Gambling

The DGOJ’s presentation in Paris focused on detecting risky gambling behaviors. Director-General Mikel Arana explained that the Spanish model draws inspiration from actual data of players diagnosed with disorders. This enables the identification of risk-associated behavioral patterns, facilitating preventive measures. The model fulfills commitments outlined in Royal Decree 176/2023, which mandates safer gambling environments. The DGOJ emphasized the importance of adapting public policies to evidence gathered within the sector.

International Collaboration to Protect Players

The event, held at the French Senate, brought together international regulators and experts in the gambling sector. The conference, organized by the ANJ, facilitated comparisons of strategies for identifying and supporting individuals with gambling problems. The DGOJ’s participation fostered the exchange of best practices and experiences among countries. The event also underscored the need for collaboration among regulatory bodies, researchers, and healthcare professionals in protecting players.

Regulatory Commitment and Evidence-Based Approach

The development of the Spanish model for detecting risky gambling behaviors is driven by regulatory obligations. Royal Decree 176/2023 establishes the need to create safer and more responsible gambling environments. The DGOJ has prioritized integrating clinical and academic data into the design of its detection tools. This approach demonstrates a commitment to protecting vulnerable players and continuously improving regulatory policies in the sector.

Exchange of Experiences and Spanish Leadership

The international event featured prominent figures from the fields of health and regulation. Isabelle Falquot-Pierrotin, President of the ANJ, opened and closed the event, emphasizing its institutional significance. The DGOJ’s presence highlighted Spanish advancements in player protection. The exchange of experiences among regulators and experts reinforces Spain’s position as a leader in gambling risk management.
