Brazil Strengthens Oversight of Sports Betting Websites
Brazil is taking significant steps to regulate its burgeoning sports betting market. MEsp Ordinance No. 31 establishes a dedicated team to supervise sports betting websites, ensuring they adhere to legal and regulatory requirements.
The team, comprised of a director and three general coordinators, will conduct periodic analyses of betting sites, focusing on key areas:
- Brand Verification: Ensuring the commercial brand used by the betting operator matches the brand registered with the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) of the Ministry of Finance.
- Betting Options Review: Confirming that the sports betting options offered align with the list established in MEsp Ordinance No. 125, dated December 30, 2024, and any subsequent updates.
- Regulatory Compliance: Identifying any practices that may violate current regulations, such as offering prohibited bets or lacking effective mechanisms to prevent underage gambling.
Any irregularities discovered will be documented in a detailed report and submitted to the SPA of the Ministry of Finance for appropriate action.
The Departments of Promotion, Entrepreneurship and Digital Economy in Sports, eSports, and Integrity in Sports Betting will provide technical support to the Directorate of Monitoring and Evaluation of Sports Betting and the Technical Team.
Furthermore, the ordinance empowers the Ministry of Sports to develop a platform to safeguard the integrity of sports operations. The Ministry can also collaborate with regulatory agencies, federal entities, educational institutions, technology companies, and international organizations to enhance oversight tools and processes.
This comprehensive approach signals Brazil’s commitment to creating a transparent and responsible sports betting environment.
