Portugal Seeks Gaming Inspectors to Oversee Booming Online Gambling Sector

Portugal’s online gaming sector is experiencing a period of significant growth. However, with this expansion comes the need for robust oversight. To ensure the integrity and security of online casinos, the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), the regulatory body responsible for licensing and monitoring gaming activities, is actively recruiting gaming inspectors.

This initiative, under the umbrella of Turismo de Portugal, I. P., aims to fill 30 inspector positions. These roles are crucial for maintaining the smooth operation of safe and legal online casinos.

Knowledge Tests for Aspiring Inspectors

The Estoril Hospitality School (EHT Estoril) will host the knowledge tests for this external competition. The tests are scheduled for April 23rd of this year.

Only 30 candidates will secure a coveted internship, offering a unique opportunity to work in a rapidly developing industry that significantly contributes to Portugal’s socio-economic landscape.

The test schedule is as follows:

  • Specific Knowledge Test A – 10:30
  • Specific Knowledge Test D – 13:00
  • Specific Knowledge Test F – 13:00

Diverse Roles Available

The inspector positions are divided into six distinct categories, each interconnected within the department.

The 30 interns will have the chance to train with the SRIJ, a nationally recognized entity vital for maintaining a legal and secure gaming sector throughout Portugal.

Land-Based Gaming Inspectors (8 Positions)

These inspectors, assessed through Specific Knowledge Test A, will focus on land-based gaming areas.

They will play a key role in combating illegal gambling and preventing money laundering, the proliferation of dangerous weapons, and the financing of terrorism.

Ideal candidates will possess strong knowledge of Public Administration and laws related to restrictive measures approved by the UN and the European Union.

IT Infrastructure Inspectors (4 Positions)

These positions (Specific Knowledge Test B) require in-depth knowledge of various technological structures, particularly Microsoft environments, network management, security departments, and routing and switching.

Familiarity with databases like Oracle, SQL Server, and administration systems like SAN is also essential, as these are integral to the infrastructures they will work with daily.

Integrity and Information Control Inspectors (8 Positions)

Candidates for Specific Knowledge Test C will be crucial for controlling and maintaining responsible gaming and related information. They must have extensive knowledge of different technologies.

Project management in information technology and administration is fundamental to this role. Inspectors will work directly with databases like Oracle, DB2, and MS SQL, and develop skills in Java and interface applications.

Online Gaming Monitoring Inspectors (8 Positions)

In Specific Knowledge Test D, candidates will play a vital role in understanding and disseminating information derived from statistical data from gaming platforms. This will contribute to the development of responsible and fair gaming activities.

Practical and theoretical knowledge of statistical methodologies and data analysis is key, along with the use of information management mechanisms.

IT Project Inspector (Land-Based) (1 Position)

With a strong programming component, Specific Knowledge Test E is crucial for developing land-based gaming.

Candidates must have in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of various programming languages, web-oriented programming, and relational and data-oriented databases.

The Importance of Gaming Regulation in Portugal

Regulation by the SRIJ is essential for the sustainable growth of the gaming sector and, above all, for ensuring that responsible gaming remains a priority at all levels.

This sector generates millions daily and can significantly contribute to the country’s socio-economic development, not only by creating numerous jobs but also by establishing Portugal as a potential investment destination.

These initiatives for new careers in the industry demonstrate the constant evolution in both physical casinos and the online environment, and the importance of these positions for the development of games of chance.
