Puebla Official Dismisses Recent Violence as “Isolated Incidents” Amidst Rising Homicide Rates
In the wake of a series of homicides and shootings across the state of Puebla, the Secretary of the Interior (Segob), Javier Aquino Limón, has characterized the events as “isolated incidents.”
During an interview this Thursday, Aquino Limón revealed that Governor Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina has urged mayors and police chiefs in the capital and metropolitan area to bolster security measures. This directive comes in response to incidents such as the one at the Big Bola casino in Lomas de Angelópolis, where two individuals were killed and another was abducted.
“Yesterday [Wednesday], there were six incidents in different municipalities of the state. They are not related; they are isolated issues. But this suddenly happens in the area of security because we had been experiencing low incident rates,” Aquino Limón stated.
He further emphasized that the state executive branch has called on metropolitan municipalities to enhance public safety efforts, citing a perceived decline in activities like operations and community outreach due to recent government transitions.
“We are calling on the municipalities not to relax and to ensure a greater presence in the metropolitan area. That was the demand,” he stressed.
Aquino affirmed that the National Guard (GN) and the Mexican Army will maintain their presence in operations led by state and municipal police forces across the 217 municipalities. This collaboration is part of ongoing commitments to public safety among the three levels of government.
“We do not want to politicize this matter, but we must coordinate better,” he acknowledged.
