ROME – Technology available to gambling operators has enabled a fundamental shift towards inherently safe physical gambling, according to Giovanni Kessler, technical advisor for Acadi (Association of Public Gaming Concessionaires) and former Director-General of the Customs and Monopolies Agency. Speaking at the “Strategies and Innovation for Responsible Gaming: People at the Heart of a Sustainable Industry” event, hosted by Novomatic Italia in Rome, Kessler stated that this approach transforms gambling into an accessible pastime, an entertainment devoid of risks.
Kessler emphasized the role of technology in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. “This is possible thanks to subjective filters, which allow us to prevent minors and people with problematic situations from gambling,” he explained. “With technology, everything becomes extremely simple, through facial recognition systems and artificial intelligence, which also allow operators to intervene in real time. Technology also helps us by improving self-exclusion procedures.”
He further elaborated on the use of technology to monitor and address problematic gambling behavior. “We can also intervene on gambling behavior, with devices that are able to recognize problematic or potentially problematic gambling behaviors, through playing time, the amount of money spent, and other parameters. Alert messages are then sent from the machine itself to the players, also with the help of artificial intelligence. The players themselves can set gambling limits, temporal or spending limits, beyond the limits imposed by the concessionaire or the legislator.”
Markus Buechele, CEO of Novomatic Italia, echoed Kessler’s sentiments, expressing confidence in collaborative efforts to mitigate problem gambling. “I am convinced that by working together, we can reach a situation where pathological gambling will no longer be a threat,” Buechele stated. “The gaming sector has long been asking itself how to better combat addictions. We are very attentive to this and are looking for increasingly effective and lasting solutions in prevention.”
Buechele highlighted Novomatic’s commitment to providing technological solutions. “We feel a moral duty to offer the most appropriate technological solutions, also with the help of artificial intelligence,” he added. “We will exploit the time given by the postponement of the reorganization of physical gaming to work even better.”
