Italian Official Warns of Illegal Gambling Sites and Risks
Luca Turchi, a director at the Gaming Controls Office of the Customs and Monopolies Agency (Adm), is raising awareness about the dangers of illegal gambling websites and how to identify them.
In an interview shared on the agency’s social media platforms, Turchi highlighted the risks associated with using unauthorized gambling sites. This announcement comes as the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Guard) in Varese recently uncovered 50 fraudulent websites.
Risks of Illegal Gambling
Turchi emphasized that players using illegal betting sites in Italy lack the protections afforded by authorized concessionaires of the Customs and Monopolies Agency. These protections include secure payment processing and proper management of gaming funds. He also reminded the public that participating in illegal gambling activities is a crime, punishable under Article 4, paragraph 3 of Law 401 of 1980.
How Adm Blocks Illegal Sites
Turchi explained the complex process Adm uses to identify and block these illegal sites. This process involves:
- Analysis of the internet by officials from the Gaming Controls Office, along with personnel from Sogei.
- A thorough check by another official to verify the initial findings.
- Consultation with the Remote Gaming Office to ensure the sites are not linked to authorized Italian concessionaires.
Following these steps, Adm issues a directive that is published on its website and distributed to internet service providers, requiring them to block the identified sites within 15 days. This procedure is based on Article 102 of Decree Law 104 of 2020, Turchi noted.
Identifying Legal Gambling Sites
Turchi provided advice on how players can distinguish between legal and illegal gambling sites. Key indicators of a legitimate site include:
- The Adm logo.
- The concession number.
- Information regarding the protection of minors, preventing underage gambling.
He stressed that these features are typically absent from illegal sites. To ensure they are using a legal site, players can visit the official Adm website, where a list of all authorized concessionaires and their associated websites is available.
